The app design industry is exploding! And it has been for the last couple of years. As the age of the smartphone continues to mature, we are seeing more and more apps being released, many complementing existing websites and businesses that have realised the power of having a smartphone presence as part of their overall online strategy.
So it will come as no surprise that, just like the rest of the website design industry, you can see trends in what is popular for app designs.
While the information below is by no means a complete and accurate prediction, there are some common design concepts that you can see emerging across the app landscape.
App design trends for 2015
Move away from flat design. While the flat or minimalist design has been very popular recently, we are starting to see a shift towards having more depth in the design. This could come from giving objects on the screen the ability to be interacted with in a more 3D manner, which creates a certain level of depth. Examples of this movement can be seen in the recent operating system designs by companies such as Apple and Google.
More whimsy! Apps are becoming increasingly fun, and taking the seriousness down a few notches. They still achieve the same level of functionality, they still get the job done, but they do it in a much more playful and amusing manner. This is a welcome development in the app designs space, as it brings a bit more lightness and humour to our daily lives.
Larger screens. Over the last decade or so weve seen the size of phones go through the full spectrum. They started out as large brick-like designs, mostly out of necessity, and then as technology improved they shrunk down to minute sizes. Now were seeing them go back the other way, as users demand increased screen sizes to watch movies and play games. This can partly be attributed to the increasing role of the smartphone in our everyday lives. Therefore app design is having to keep up to speed with the growing screen sizes that we see from most handset manufacturers. This creates a fantastic opportunity to deliver vivid and interactive content that takes full advantage of the larger screens, which are also often in HD.
