The key to designing a website that is successful and effective is to make sure that it is functional and easy to use from your target audience’s perspective. There are literally millions (maybe even billions) of websites out there, but not all of them are effective at conveying their message or serving their purpose. Website design needs to focus on the user, as they are the ones in the drivers seat.
There are some key principles that should be followed as part of the web design process. Below are the key principles of web design that anyone looking to launch a website should follow.
Key Web Design Principles to Follow
- Keep it simple. The first rule to web design is to make sure that you dont make it too difficult for the user. Everything on the page should be pretty much self-explanatory, avoiding anything that could potentially confuse the user. An intuitive layout and site navigation is crucial to achieving an effectively designed website. The best way to approach this is to think about what questions the user or reader is going to be asking themselves when they visit the website. When youve nailed down the answer to that question, provide the answer on the front page (in a visually appealing manner, of course).
- Make sign up easy. Most websites will want users to sign up to a newsletter or join a group to keep them informed, and thereby build up an email marketing list. o give your website the best chance of having its users sign up, make the process as easy as possible. Avoid asking them to input large amounts of information, just keep it to the bare minimum, this way they are more likely to complete the process.
- Manage focus. One of the great advantages of websites as a marketing tool is the ability of the designer to direct the focus of the user. By using graphics, fonts and colours, they can guide the focus where it needs to be. This will be different depending upon the purpose of the site. This ties in with the concept of simplicity, by giving the users direction as to the focus of the site. Make it clear what action you want them to take when they land on your site.
- Balance. This involves making sure that you keep a balance on the page, so that it isnt skewed to either side. It is about making sure that the site has a certain level of symmetry, which factors into the visual appeal.
